Bob Carter is a research professor at James Cook University (Queensland). He is a marine geologist and environmental scientist with more than 30 years professional experience. He has held tenured academic staff positions at the University of Otago and James Cook University (Townsville), where he was professor and head of the School of Earth Sciences between 1981 and 1999. He is a former director of the Australian Office for the Ocean Drilling Program, the premier, world-best-practice, international research program for environmental and earth sciences. His research has been supported by grants from competitive public research agencies, especially the Australian Research Council, which in 1998 awarded him a Special Investigator grant. He receives no research funding from special-interest organizations such as environmental groups, energy companies, or government departments.
